The GreenScores and GreenUPC mission is to help in-store customers find and purchase from companies that are ecologically and socially responsible. Consumers will be able to choose these companies based on their eco-social grades and company overviews. This grade system could be:: 1/ a PASS/ FAIL system 2/ based on the A, B, C, D or F scale 3/ or simply a PASS system GS and GUPC will provide retail stores with a simple GS/GUPC Master Database/ table of eco-socio graded and summarized companies that can be easily integrated into their product labeling and pricing system using the UPC code system. This database will be free for now. GreenScores will also provide images and files that can be used to print signs, displays and booklets to get-out-the-scores. The GreenScores and GreenUPCorganizations, other non-profit organizations and individuals can grade companies and contribute to the database. Adding to the database is currently open to all. Permission to post to the GS/ GUPC Master Database may eventually be on an approval process - if it becomes necessary. Non-profit organizations who currently score companies, and who would like to be represented in this project are very welcome to apply for a yearly partnership status in the project. Approved organizations who contribute to the database will be broadly acknowledged and promoted in GreenScores and GreenUPC publications and websites. GreenPages (Coop-America), GreenSeal and GreenHeartGuide are examples of these orgs whom we respect and hope will join us. Grading organizations who participate will be asked provide: a simple table of companies, their A to F grades, contact info, company overview, product category and UPC code. This info will be merged into the GC/ VV Master Database/ table list that will be provided to retail stores. In the case where there are multiple scores for the same company, GS/ GUPC will decide which score to include in the master database. Individuals are asked not to review or score a business they work for.
If the PASS grading system is decided upon, all it would take is a single letter with a couple asterisks on cash receipts and shelf labels to indicate a company had passed. These score could look like this: *A* or *G*, =A=, ~A~, or +G+ . Adding a nice logo to the letter — or instead of the letter — would be great too. If the A, B, C, D, F grading system is decided upon, here are several format ideas that stores could use to print GreenScores on their pricing labels, receipts and signage. GreenScores = A*EcoScore B*SocialScore GreenScores = A*eco B*social GS = A*EcoScore B*SocialScore GS = A * B Gs=A*B G=A*B =A*B= =AB= gAB The 'GS = B*A' format would be good for cash receipts where space is limited. As for a logo that could be designed to be integrated into these scores, there could be an arrow that sweeps around the letters to indicate the grade. For example, an 'A' grade would have an arrow going around it all the way in a circle- "from 12 o'clock to 12 o'clock". A 'D' grade would have an arrow that starts and 12 and only goes to 1 o'clock. |

THE TINY CURRENT GREENSCORES DATABASE IS UP !! The current working GS/ GUPC Database is at groups.yahoo.com/ group/GreenScores. To see and edit this GS/ GUPC Master Database first click on the 'Join This Group' button, and then click on 'Database' in left column. Then select the GREENSCORES/ GREENUPC : MASTER DATABASE. The webpage version of the above GS/ GUPC Database that will be frequently updated is currently at www.greentopia.org/ GreenScores/data.htm. If an organization or individual is going to score more than just a few companies, they are requested to create their own database/table using the database function. If their 'sub-database' is approved - it will be merged with the master GS/ GUPC Database. If prefered, they can post their database/table somewhere else on the web and then send us a link to it. For the time being... the GS/ GUPC Master Database is open for ANYONE to add new companies and to edit - so back up your work. Plus, please be sure to add your name and contact info to the editor column. ALSO, pretty PLEASE.... post a message to the message board if you have edited or added to the GS/ GUPC MASTER DATABASE. ;-} Welcome to new GS/ GUPC graders/reviewers !!!! ;-) CONTRIBUTE YOUR DATABASE TODAY Create a new database today using the database function at http://groups.yahoo.com/ group/GreenScores/, or send us a link to an online database/ table that you have created. Once one or more of your scores in your database have been approved, they will be merged with the GS/ GUPC Master Database. Companies that are included in the database with your scores will include your organization's name or your personal name in the 'Grader' column of the GS/ GUPC Master Database. Databases will be approved based on our informal 'ecological and social responsibility standards" and an audit process that have not yet been formalized. It will be eventually... soon? |
